  Weekly Baja Fish Report

March 3rd, 2010

  • Loreto: Winds are still a problem. There were a few yellowtail up to 15 pounds when the winds would let the pangas run far enough offshore. Conditions look good, but the winds will probably interrupt the fishing off and on throughout March.
  • La Paz: Winds can be a problem here as well, but there are some areas (such as Muertos Bay) that are somewhat protected, and can be fished when weather won’t permit running offshore. Surface action is good for sierras and rooster fish. Not much action on the yellowtail. There has also been some deep fishing for pargo and cabrilla.
  • East Cape: There have been more calm days than windy this week. Some fishing for a few yellowtail, but most of the concentration has been on grouper, cabrilla, and pargo.
  • San Jose del Cabo: The only offshore action has been some minimal fishing for bill fish on the pacific side of Cabo San Lucas. On the sea side, fishing has been better closer in. The panga fleet has focused on the solid bonito bite, with some tuna, amberjack, dorado and roosterfish mixed in. The bait is moving toward the sea, as it does this time of year, so the action on the sea side should continue to improve.
  • Cabo San Lucas: The boats out of the harbor have had very little luck for the stripers. A few billfish are being spotted, but few are being caught. There was a small group of tuna in the 20-25 pound range that showed up for a few days. The boats picked off less than 20 of them before they left. This is the slow time of year for this area, so it only gets better from here.

My choice for next week: I would head to La Paz. Areas are available to fish even when the wind blows, and there is nothing wrong with bending your rod on the available sierras and roosterfish.
