Long Range

Long Range

The Long Range Series belt is another outstanding and durable "Smitty" fighting belt. The LRS is larger than the very popular Smitty's Large Day Belt and can be worn with or without a harness. It is handcrafted and created for the angler that wants a light weight belt that is large enough to spread the pressure over the thighs while wearing it with a harness and still do the job for those who do not want to wear a harness. The LRS comes with a 2" webbed belt for those times you are not wearing a harness

There are two considerations when selecting the right long-range belt: size and construction.
Belts made to fight fish over 150# have to be wide enough to fit across your thighs. If the harness is just barely wide enough it will work until you have to set your legs apart to really pull on a fish. At that point one side or the other will slip inside your thigh, the rod butt slips off the belt, etc. etc. Not good.
For fish over 150# select the extra large size. The large size will work with care if you do not get too crazy while pulling on manageable fish.
Construction is another matter. At the risk of offending some vendors I am recommending you avoid a plastic harnesses for fish over 150#. It is not unusual for the rod pin on a plastic belt to rip loose under extremely heavy strain. If you are planning on using a harness (where maximum pressure can be achieved) on fish over 150# pick a welded aluminum belt. These types of belts are not mass produced, they are constructed one at a time. Smitty belts are this type. The only other option that could be strong enough is the SKB belt. It is built with some type of super durable material and it is cheaper, but it is a little smaller than I like. For the big cows (tuna over 200#), I would stay with the Smitty. You only buy it once.
